Coalfield 5th Grader Takes 3rd Place in TN History Day

Congratulations to Carter Lowe, a 5th grade student at Coalfield School! Carter took 3rd place at Tennessee History Day in Nashville for his historical paper, "Taking A Stand to Save the Obed River." He will be an alternate to attend National History Day in Washington DC if either the first- or second-place winners are unable to go.

This year's theme was "Taking a Stand" and students were encouraged to be creative when selecting the topic of their project. Carter competed against students representing public and private schools from across Tennessee. His essay was judged by university professors, graduate students, high school teachers, librarians, archivists, and other public historians, who awarded him 3rd place!

He is pictured with Secretary of State Tre Hargett, who recalled visiting Coalfield and chatted with the Lowes about the Coalfield Library. We are proud of you, Carter!
