The Role of the Parent in Education

Parents/guardians are the most influential people in a child's life. Children look to their parents for love, support, and guidance--things which are vital to a child's proper development. Research shows that parental involvement is crucial to enhancing a child's education. It has also been proven that some of the most outstanding students have parents who are actively involved in monitoring homework and participating in various activities that include the child and his/her education. Here are some specific ways that parents can get involved and help their children become the best students they can be.

1)

Make sure your child has a good night's rest.

2)

See that your child eats a healthy breakfast.

3)

Establish a quiet place and a certain time each day for homework.

4)

Let your child know that you value hard work and learning effort in school.

5)

Volunteer at your child's school.

6)

Attend sporting events or other school events--especially when your child is participating.

7)
Keep in touch with your child's teachers by attending parent-teacher conferences or by other means.
8)
Praise your child's work and effort and encourage them to do their best.
9)

Help your child with his/her work if needed.

10)
If your child needs additional help, talk to your child's teachers about tutoring or other assistance.
11)
Make sure your children attend school on a regular basis and discourage them from missing inappropriately.
