Morgan County School Board

Tennessee School Board Association

Since its beginnings in 1939, the TSBA (Tennessee School Board Association) mission has been to assist school boards to effectively govern school districts. It provides many services to the Morgan County School Board.

TSBA outlines duties for school board members and offers policy recommendations. Also, it assists the school board in filling administrative positions and provides legal assistance. Furthermore, the TSBA, along with the Tennessee Department of Education, hosts training sessions for school board members throughout the year.

In 1990, the Tennessee Legislature mandated that school board members be properly trained during their service on the board. In 1996, the State Board of Education added the requirement that all school board members in their first year of service attend a two-day orientation session in Nashville plus one seven-hour core module. There are four core modules that school board members must complete during their first four years of service. They are Board Policy, Advocacy for Children, Vision for Excellence, and Board-Superintendent Relations. Additionally, there are three elective modules that school board members may attend: School Law, Managing Change, and Assessment on CD-Rom. Furthermore, two joint academy modules are offered: A Joint Venture and Team Building. These are designed for an entire board and its superintendent to attend together. If a board attends one of these joint academies, board members are given an additional year to complete their four core modules.

The Morgan County School Board pays annual membership dues to the TSBA of $4,404. Included in these dues is liability insurance.

Most of this information was gathered from the Tennessee School Board Association.
